Intercountry Adoption Counselling Support

Our relationship with others and ourselves can be challenging at times. Sometimes we need help being honest and open about the issues we face. The intercountry adoption process has its own unique challenges. Counselling can bring hope through supporting couples, families and individuals to talk about their concerns and explore solutions.

Our specially trained counsellors are located across Australia. Counselling is provided face-to-face, via phone or web based.

Counselling focuses on providing a supportive, safe and confidential space where people can discuss issues that are causing them or those around them concern. A counsellors role is to:

  • help people (individuals, couples, children, families) identify and express issues that are impacting on their well being
  • explore what might be adding to or influencing those issues and
  • to work with people in finding resolutions that suit each individual circumstance.

Our counsellors have experience working in the area of Intercountry Adoption. They assist people to work through a range of issues including:

  • manage the impact of the intercountry adoption process (challenges, hurdles, emotional stress) on individuals and couples
  • understand yourself and how you relate to and communicate with others
  • manage the transition from a couple to parents
  • the impact of new members entering an existing familiy dynamic
  • complex trauma and attachment issues
  • develop positively as a person, couple or family unit.

Accessing Counselling Services

If you would like to or are unsure about accessing our services, the first step is to contact the Intercountry Adoption Support Coordinator on 1300 543 396 or via email at icasupport@lifeworks.com.au

The Coordinator will speak with you about your situation and talk through the counselling process. At this point you can decide if you would like to be referred to your nearest counsellor.

The counsellor will then contact you to introduce themselves and make an initial appointment. At this first appointment, the counsellor will get to know you and your concerns. You will also get to know the counsellor.

Depending on your needs, the number of sessions may vary. This will be discussed with you at the time of your first appointment.

It’s important to remember that counselling is a tool that can be used to help strengthen your relationships, build your self awareness and increase your well being and the well being of those around you. Counselling is a self development tool that helps people to deal with the challenges of life and the decisions we make.

Counselling is also available for adopted children, teens and adults

Please note: In some cases, counselling may only be available via phone or video link depending on geographic location.

The Counselling Framework

Our counsellors have unique experience in the challenges associated with being an intercountry adoptive family. We use a ten session framework to access, understand and support individuals and families to respond to and work on a range of issues. This framework allows us to support as well as ascertain whether a family or individual can benefit from further extended support.
